It’s common knowledge that we need to look after our teeth, but we often forget about the importance of looking after our gums. Taking care of your gum health should be as much of a priority as your teeth, which is why we recommend seeing a dental hygienist, as well as your dentist in Falmouth, regularly. Your dentist and dental hygienist will work together to create a tailored plan for your oral health care, to make sure your teeth and gums are well looked after and any oral health concerns are caught nice and early. Trust us, you’ll be glad you invested in your oral health further down the track!
Your gums create the supporting structure for your teeth, which means a healthy smile can’t exist without healthy gums! In addition to protecting our teeth, our gums also serve as a protective seal, helping to prevent bacteria that naturally live in the mouth from reaching the jawbone below. Without regular dental hygiene appointments and effective toothbrushing, plaque can accumulate around the gums and cause inflammation, which is what causes gum disease.
When left untreated, gum disease can cause the gums to pull away from the teeth, creating a gap or pocket between the teeth and gums which bacteria can get into. Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease, but if the bacteria reach and cause damage to the jawbone below, this can eventually lead to tooth loss. Once gum disease reaches this stage, it’s referred to as periodontal disease, and needs to be treated extremely carefully. Periodontal disease can be effectively managed with professional deep cleaning below the gum line – called subgingival root debridement – which is usually performed under local anaesthetic.
If not treated early and properly, gum disease can be a really serious condition. That’s why we recommend a robust home cleaning routine and regular hygiene appointments; essential to helping you keep on top of your gum health!
